Heather Z. Lyons, Ph.D.
Welcome. I am a licensed psychologist in private practice and a professor of psychology at Loyola College in Maryland. Previously, I have provided therapy in a variety of settings including the counseling centers at the University of Maryland and Georgia State University, the D.C. Center for Mental Health, and the Whitman Walker Clinic. At these sites I enjoyed providing individual, couples, and group therapy to men and women from a variety of cultural backgrounds. I particularly enjoyed and continue to enjoy working with clients wanting to change hurtful and unfulfilling relationship patterns, manage depression and anxiety, understand identity concerns, confront new stages in life, cope with grief and loss, and identify career interests.
As a professor of psychology, I have been educating and mentoring masters-level counselors and doctoral-level psychologists-in-training to pursue careers in mental health. Specifically, I enjoy supervising students’ adult therapy cases, teaching courses in counseling and psychotherapy skills, counseling and psychotherapy theories, organizational psychology, and multicultural psychology. In terms of scholarly writing, I have published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology, the Journal of Counseling and Development, the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, and The Handbook of Multicultural Counseling. My presentations, invited and peer-reviewed, have been at professional conferences such as the American Psychological Association’s Annual Convention and for lay audiences at venues such as The National Press Club.

"Dr. Heather Lyons is an outstanding psychologist - all at once she is
intelligent, insightful, engaging, empathic, and effective. Dr. Lyons is
committed to providing clients with culturally competent care, and she
truly understands how important context is in people's lives. I have
consulted with her on cases over the past 10 years, and she always provides
insightful comments that communicate a clear understanding of the client's
issues. Further, she makes practical suggestions that truly help people
make and sustain positive changes in their lives. If I needed to refer a
